The American Arab Chamber of Commerce has owed a great deal to the contributions and efforts of its board of directors. We look forward to continuing this great tradition as we welcome Dr. Yahya Basha to the Board of Directors. The entire organization proudly welcomes Dr. Basha and looking forward to building bridges with his expertise and leadership.
Dr. Basha came to the United States in 1972 as an intern at Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital and completed his residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. In 1980, he began his own radiology practice which he later incorporated into Basha Diagnostics, a diagnostic medical imaging company with five locations serving patients and physicians across Southeast Michigan.
Dr. Basha’s achievements in the medical field led him to be appointed to the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation (NCFMEA) for the United States Department of Education, where he served from 2002 until 2005.
He has worked extensively on the issues of civil rights, civic participation, and anti-discrimination, and was appointed by Governor John Engler of Michigan to the State of Michigan Civil Rights Commission from 1999- 2003. In 2006 he was appointed a “Civilian Ambassador” by the U.S. State Department, traveling to the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark, as part of Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Karen Hughes’ efforts to improve and clarify the U.S. image abroad.
He is on the Advisory Board of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and is a National Advisory Board Member of the Arab American National Museum (AANM), on the Board of Governors of the Arab American Institute (AAI) in Washington, and on the Board of the National American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC).
Dr. Basha is also a Foundation Board Member of the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) in California, Board Member of the World Elijah Interfaith Academy, based in Jerusalem, on the Board of the Syrian American Congress (SAC) in Chicago, and a member of BRIDGES, a formalized working body created to bridge the gap between Arab-Americans and law enforcement.
Married and living with his wife and seven children in West Bloomfield, Michigan, Dr. Basha continues to be involved in causes that promote civil rights and civic responsibility, and continues to fight against discrimination.
